Iconic Trek in the Andes

The Classic Inca Trail is approximately 43 miles long with a high point at Dead Woman’s Pass, around 4,200 meters above sea level. The 4-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a combination of difficult ascents and descents amid alpine vistas and cloud forest. During the walk trekkers pass through notable ancient sites including Patallacta, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñayhuayna. Each one offers a cultural and historical layer to the walking experience.

Day 1: Start the Inca Trail

The 4-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu starts in the Cusco region before you get at the official trailhead. The first leg of the walk follows the path toward Patallacta, a stunning archaeological complex surrounded by mountain landscapes. From there the trail continues to the first camping spot. The first day provides a chance to become accustomed to the terrain and savour the blend of historic paths, river valleys and breathtaking scenery that characterise the Inca Trail.

Day 2: Cross Dead Woman’s Pass

Day two is regarded as one of the most gruelling stretches of the trek. Trekkers climb to Warmiwañusqa, or Dead Woman’s Pass, at around 4,200 meters. After the strenuous ascent, the trail dips toward the Pacaymayu Valley. This is a tough portion, but the scenery is ever changing and the vistas of the mountains are spectacular and one of the memorable highlights of the voyage.

Day 3: Explore Ancient Inca Sites

Day three is a blend of archaeological exploring and some of the most picturesque sections of the journey. The trail continues through Runkurakay and Sayacmarca to Phuyupatamarca and Wiñayhuayna. Stone walkways, terraces, cloud forest foliage and old structures provide for a magnificent atmosphere. This leg brings you closer to the engineering, culture and history of the Inca civilisation, while continuing the hike to Machu Picchu.

Day 4 – Machu Picchu Through the Sun Gate

The last morning begins with the walk to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. From this famous overlook, travellers get their first panoramic glimpse of Machu Picchu. The itinerary continues toward the citadel for a guided visit to this magnificent archaeological site. Once tourists have completed the Machu Picchu adventure they then make their way on to the town of Aguas Calientes for their onwards journey.
